Totoro DS Case Pattern

Here is a DS case I made for my friend. It is an original pattern and I wrote it down for future reference, and I thought maybe others would be interested. This is my first posted pattern so please let me know if there are any mistakes or anything you need clarified. It is a pretty simple pattern I think, unless you aren’t used to switching colors, but writing it down seemed to me made it more complicated than it really is.

Materials:
Yarn: grey and some kind of white (I used Red Heart Super Saver’s Aran), a little bit of black
Crochet hook size G
Yarn needle
Felt: white and black
Some kind of string to tie the top, I used a shoelace

You will be crocheting in the round, so make a circle starting with grey; either a magic circle or crocheting two chains and starting in the second chain from the hook will work.

When switching colors, switch in the stitch before the new color is supposed to start. Insert hook into this stitch and pull through the current yarn color. You should have two loops on your hook of the same color. Drop the working yarn and take the new color yarn and pull that yarn through the two loops and the new color yarn should now be on your hook. (If that wasn’t clear, just search how to switch yarn colors on google or youtube, I’m sure those will be much more helpful.)

Also, when you are using one color, I recommend having the other color yarn carried across loosely on top of the row and worked over about every three stitches. If you work over it every stitch, the color tends to show through, and that is sort of ugly. If you don’t work over it at all, though, then the yarn goes across the middle of the bag, and it will make putting your DS into the bag quite awkward.

REMEMBER TO JOIN ROUNDS

Round 1: In the round, 2 SC (grey); switch to white, 3 SC; switch to grey, 1 SC; join - 6 SC

Round 2: (grey) 2 SC in next 2 SC; (white) 2 SC in next 3 SC; (grey) 2 SC in next SC - 12 SC

Round 3: (grey) *1 SC in next SC, 2 SC in next SC* twice; (white) * three times; (grey) * once - 18 SC

Round 4: (grey) *1 SC in next 2 SC, 2 SC in next SC* twice; (white) * three times; (grey) * once - 24 SC

Round 5: (grey) *1 SC in next 3 SC, 2 SC in next SC* twice; (white) * three times; (grey) * once - 30 SC

Round 6: (grey) *1 SC in next 4 SC, 2 SC in next SC* twice; (white) * three times; (grey) * once - 36 SC

Round 7-22: (grey) 1 SC in next 12 SC; (white) 1 SC in next 18 SC; (grey) 1 SC in next 6 SC - 36 SC

Round 23: (grey) 1 SC in next 13 SC; (white) 1 SC in next 16 SC; (grey) 1 SC in next 7 SC - 36 SC

Round 24: (grey) 1 SC in next 14 SC; (white) 1 SC in next 14 SC; (grey) 1 SC in next 8 SC - 36 SC

Round 25: (grey) 1 SC in next 15 SC; (white) 1 SC in next 12 SC; (grey) 1 SC in next 9 SC - 36 SC

Round 26: (grey) 1 SC in next 16 SC; (white) 1 SC in next 10 SC; (grey) 1 SC in next 10 SC - 36 SC

Round 27: (grey) 1 SC in next 18 SC; (white) 1 SC in next 6 SC; (grey) 1 SC in next 12 SC - 36 SC

I recommend sewing on the chest marks here or after another round or two because if you finish the case first, it is difficult to stick your hand in the bag and use a needle.

Round 28-36: (grey) SC around - 36 SC

Round 37: DC around - 36 DC

Fasten off.

Make the eyes with felt and sew on a nose and the whiskers with the black yarn. Use the spaces that double crochets make to pull through a string or whatever you are using to close the case (I used a shoelace).
